Tauranga Creative Fibre rooms were a hive of activity Saturday 7 July 2018 as our selector Dianne Dudfield reviewed and made a final selection of 167 items for our upcoming Fibrefastic Exhibition 27-29 July at Tauranga Racecourse!
Wow there are some truly fantastic items going to be on display, and we are all curious to see what items Dianne selects as winner for the following nine categories:
Best Knitted Entry, Best Crochet Entry, Best Felt Entry, Best Weaving Entry, Best Use of Colour, Best Handspun Entry, Best First Time Entry, Best Mixed Media Entry and of course the ‘Selector’s Choice’ award.
“I reviewed some great quality items but always a detailed eye for finishing is key to the success of a piece,” said Dianne as she spent the day in careful consideration. “It is really important to darn in all ends and finish off by washing and stretching out flat with pins where necessary and also that the method and materials are suitable to the end product’’ explains committee member Christine Nicholls.
“Overall there is a tremendous range of techniques and methods on display this year” adds Joan Hansford-Jensen, Exhibition Convenor. Jan Wild BOP Creative Fibre Area Delegate will officially open the exhibition and present the awards at 11am Friday 27 July and Dianne will speak briefly.
The exhibition committee were in force, coordinating the selection process, and doing all the behind the scenes admin and processing to ensure a great display of items. A big thanks to our members Shirley McCallum and Anne Gawith who arranged catering and helped the committee.
We all enjoyed our day immensely, seeing work we have seen before being proudly submitted and some impressive new and surprising pieces prepared by members. We took good care of the items of which we knew were many hours in the making (always enjoyable and creatively interesting hours or course).
See you at the exhibition. Don’t forget to invite all your friends and family…this will be a great event! 10am-4pm, 27, 28 & 29 July, Tauranga Racecourse. Plenty of parking available.
Dianne Dudfield is regarded as one of New Zealand’s foremost textile artists and hand-dyes all her fibre before weaving. Our members were in high attendance earlier this year when we were delighted to be given a talk on colour by Dianne.
Her weaving brings the subtlety of colour blending and design together and her work is much admired, most recently completing an exciting range of woven scarfs depicting native Pururi, Harakeke, Pohutakawa Rata, Kotukutuku and Silver Fern (see right).
The latest awards Dianne has received include the Complex Weavers Award for excellence in weaving beyond plain weave in 2017. Also the 2017 Creative Fibre Bay of Plenty Area Exhibition Barbara Wilson Award for The Most Outstanding Weaving Entry and the Wairoa Trophy Award for The Best Individual Entry in the Exhibition.
